What is a Treaty?
A treaty is a formal and binding written agreement entered into by actors in international law, usually sovereign states and international organisations but can include individuals and other actors.What is Double Taxation?
Double taxation is a tax principle referring to income taxes paid twice on the same source of income. It can occur when income is taxed at both the corporate level and personal level.Double taxation also occurs in international trade or investment when the same income is taxed in two different countries.
Double Tax Treaties
Many countries have entered into tax treaties with other countries to avoid or mitigate double taxation.
Such treaties may cover a range of taxes including income taxes, inheritance taxes, value added taxes, or other taxes. Besides bilateral treaties, multilateral treaties are also in place.
